Harnessing the Power of Extroversion: Connecting with Introverted Colleagues

As a former extroverted leader, I know firsthand the challenges that come with trying to communicate and connect with our introverted colleagues. But fear not, my fellow extroverts, I'm here to share some of the strategies I've learned through my own journey and through coaching other leaders.

First and foremost, it's important to acknowledge that not everyone operates on our level of energy and intensity. I used to think that if I just talked louder or smiled bigger, I could get everyone on board with my ideas. But the reality is that introverted people might need more time to process and formulate their thoughts. So now, I encourage my clients to slow down and create space for others to speak up. It's amazing what great ideas can come from quiet voices.

Another thing I've learned is that introverted people might communicate differently than we do. They might prefer written communication over verbal, or need time to prepare before a meeting or presentation. It's important to understand and respect those preferences, rather than expecting everyone to conform to our extroverted style. So now, I coach my clients to ask their team members how they prefer to communicate and adjust accordingly. It's a small but powerful way to show that we value and appreciate their input.

And finally, as extroverts, we sometimes forget to listen more than we speak. It's not intentional, but we get so caught up in our excitement and enthusiasm that we forget to give others a chance to share their perspective. So now, I encourage my clients to actively listen and ask open-ended questions to encourage discussion. It's amazing how much we can learn and grow from others when we take the time to listen.

In conclusion, my fellow extroverted leaders, let's embrace our personalities while also learning to connect and communicate better with our introverted colleagues. By being empathetic, respectful, and open-minded, we can create a more inclusive and effective team. And if all else fails, just remember to keep a sense of humor about it all. After all, life's too short to take ourselves too seriously.
